Louisiana authorities on Sunday evening reported the primary dying from Hurricane Ida after a 60-year-old man was fatally injured when he was struck by a fallen tree.
The fatality was reported in Ascension Parish, which is northwest of New Orleans, at about 8:30 p.m. native time at a house off Freeway 621 in Prairieville, authorities stated.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Workplace stated that deputies responded and confirmed the dying.
“Tragically, we now have our first dying of Hurricane Ida in Louisiana,” Gov John Bel Edwards stated in a press release. “Please shelter in place and keep secure. We are going to start injury assessments and search and rescue missions as quickly as it’s secure within the morning.”
Earlier Sunday Ida barged ashore within the state as a harmful Class 4 storm packing winds of up 150 mph.
The storm crawled inland and dropped to a Class 2 storm, thrashing New Orleans because it handed inside 30 miles of the town.
All of New Orleans misplaced energy within the storm, metropolis officers stated.
About 97 % of close by Jefferson Parish was with out energy as a primary transmission tower collapsed into the Mississippi River, WWL radio reported.
“A transmission tower went down,” Jefferson parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng informed the outlet.
“That is close to the Avondale space. This tower, my understanding is, served a big portion of New Orleans, the Eastbank, this can be a main tower.”
